Field Trip to Insect Zoo and Manhattan Zoo

April 28, Preschool field trip to Kansas State University campus in Manhattan to the Insect Zoo. Both the morning and afternoon classes went together. Moms Elisa Schotte and Susan Schotte, teacher Terry Harries (back row); next row, Nikki Bohlken (Connor's mom), Allison's back is to us by Nikki, then I think it's Rook, Maria, and Aaliyah. We were given a presentation of different insects, and the kids were able to touch certain ones if they wanted to...i.e., tarantulas, something with lots of legs...centipedes or something, hissing cockroaches, etc. (ICK)They had a replica of a kitchen with different examples of different insects people may find in different areas, and they also had some different food examples from different cultures, not to mention that in the US we do actually use an insect derivitive in differnet things (such as make up)...we were told if you see "carmine" listed as an ingredient, then that's an insect....hmmmmOne of the exhibit rooms had a bee hive with a tube where the bees could go back and forth from inside to outside, etc. The kids could try on a beekeeper's hat if they wanted to do so.In that same room was an ant village...it was really cool. This picture obviously does not do it justice, but you could see these ants traveling through the tubes carrying these HUGE chunks of vegetables and food on their backs...to be able to see what they carry in relation to their size. There was a microscope with a computer screen that the kids enjoyed looking at really tiny microscopic organisms...this was something new for them.Just one of the many, many (icky) exhibits of different species of cockroaches...who knew there were so many and they could get so big...ick, ick, ick.A little chance to run around outside the Insect Zoo. There is also a butterfly exhibit building but it wasn't open this morning. On to the Sunset Zoo in Manhattan for our sack lunches that we brought along to eat in the shelter house. The kids were looking at a peacock who was flaunting it's feathers at the time. Miss Allison has quite a mess in her lunch box. On the way down she got into her lunch box and decided she and Aaliyah (who was riding with us) were hungry. SHe opened her apple sauce, and had it all over her lap (which the twins' mom cleaned up for me in the truck) and it was all over the inside of her insulated lunch box. (sigh)...you can only imagine what it was like.... Play structure just outside the shelter house.
Long story about why she is sitting by herself right after lunch but suffice it to say she was pouting over having to hold onto her jacket....
We had a phenomenal zoo keeper who did a programe for the children. His name was Jeremy, and you could tell that he had worked with young children before. I don't know if he was an education major or what, but he was AWESOME! Right on the level with the kids with how to keep their attention, etc. "Trying" to do an elephant walk with holding hands....
Mrs. Harries feeding a meal worm to the fluffy furry chicken.
I can't even remember what this exhibit was, but the kids had a great day.
