Friday -- Still Driving

I took pictures of something today! Yay!!!

We started out our day in Birmingham, Alabama. I read where the population of metro Birmingham is about 1 million people, so it's a good size town. Upon reading up about the town in our hotel, we decided to find the town pride...the sculpture "Vulcan".Vulcan is a sculpture that was created for the 1904 St. Louis World's Exposition to celebrate and show off the iron industry of the Birmingham area. The community made a park for the sculpture and it the pride of the town. We toured the museum, and then rode up in the elevator to the observation of the statue. The picture below is obviously on it's side - the tower on the 'top' or to the right is where the elevator is...the walkway around the observation deck is see-through mesh metal...a little unnerving for me.
We tried to go visit an old metal plant that was abandoned in 1971, it is supposedly open to the public with free admission, the Sloss Mill, but the gate was locked up. Bruce enjoyed driving around the downtown area. I found it fairly depressed and sad, with a lot of closed businesses and empty storefronts.

When we left Birmingham, we headed north back up towards other areas of Alabama...we kept getting on the wrong highways so to speak, so we kept trying...

We found this old covered bridge, which Bruce found intriguing. It said a weight limit of 3 tons, and it looked really rickety. I was a chicken, I admit it. I wouldn't drive on it or walk on it....I took pictures of Bruce doing it. :) This was what supports the bridge. Do you see why I didn't go on it!?!?!? LOL

And then I had to take a picture of our rental car. Bruce keeps making fun of it. It's a Pontiac Vibe. I figure if it's a Pontiac then it must be American, right? :) Gas mileage is really good. We filled up this morning for $15, and drove about 400 miles yesterday! :)
Here is a little video clip of Bruce driving across the bridge.

We are staying in a town called Decatur, on our way back through Huntsville, Alabama. We are planning to tour Lynchburg/Jack Daniels' Distillery tomorrow I think, and then head back up to Nashville. Zac Brown Band is playing at the Wildhorse Saloon tomorrow night; I would like to go see them, so we shall see.
